Prevent Slips And Falls This Winter

2019-11-19T14:14:35-05:00

In my last blog post I highlighted some of the lovely benefits of chiropractic for seniors. Building on that theme, I’d like to send a big shout out to my patient Sonya who shared with me a resource I didn’t previously know about.  It’s a website that’s crucial for seniors but relevant to everyone, as slips and falls can happen at any age. The website is called Rate My Treads. Check it out here: http://www.ratemytreads.com/ Its stated goal is to help you “test” your winter footwear. (And prevent slips so you stay safe on the streets.) From the website: ==== “Slips [...]

83-Yr-Old Gets Her Groove Back

2019-11-11T13:38:30-05:00

Meet my patient Doreen. We started working together when she was 82, after we met at a retired persons association meeting where I’d given a talk. Like most people her age, she had several health concerns.  But with regular adjustments she soon found herself with an extra spring in her step.  Most notably, the stiff neck she’d suffered with for years had regained almost full range of motion. Watch this brief video to hear Doreen tell the story in her own words: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edQX7zo7frw&feature=youtu.be Here’s what I love about this… Her body, at her age, still has the power to heal! But I’ve never been more convinced that anyone can enjoy vibrant health and a high standard of life throughout a full 100-year lifespan.  We’re taught to think that we’re born, we live, then we get a disease and we die.  It doesn’t have to be that way!  I’m not saying you can live forever.  But you can live up to your potential throughout ALL your years. And it doesn’t have to be that hard. Here are 5 simple rules for 100-years of healthy life: Eat well. Kick the SAD (Standard American Diet) out of [...]

Move It Or Lose It

2016-04-27T19:04:45-04:00

Typically when you hear the phrase "move it or lose it" it refers to losing muscle strength from lack of exercise. However a recent study from University of Miami showed that lack of exercise can result in cognitive decline in older people by 10 years. Another study released earlier this year by Boston University found increased blood flow resulting from physical activity protected brain volume, which also protects its ability to function properly. "Physical activity is an attractive option to reduce the burden of cognitive impairment in public health because it is low cost and doesn't interfere with medications," Dr. Clinton Wright, an associate professor [...]

Lack of exercise is twice as deadly as obesity.

2015-01-17T00:57:58-05:00

Even a small amount of exercise, such as brisk daily 20 minute walk, reduces the risk of premature death. It seems more and more studies are showing that any level of activity has benefit. So begin today by doing something. Researchers estimated that 337,000 of the 9.2 million deaths amongst European men and women each year were attributable to obesity but twice this number of deaths could be attributed to physical inactivity. They found that even small amounts of exercise, such as brisk 20 minute walk each day which burns around 100 calories, had major health impacts, reducing the risk of [...]

What is your life plan?

2013-08-02T11:27:20-04:00

At 92, Ed Stafford golfs, dances, travels - and sees his chiropractor regularly to help him do it all with ease Use it or lose it. That’s the motto constantly repeated by Ed Stafford’s chiropractor, and the 92-year-old takes it to heart. Three days a week, he’s out on the golf course, chalking up nine holes; Thursday nights he can be found giving line-dancing lessons at a local seniors’ centre in Oakville. In winter he and his wife, Monica, snowbird off to Florida, where he’s out on the links almost every day. “I only started using a golf cart these last [...]
