Secret to better health? Less meat, more veggies.

2013-12-20T09:34:52-05:00

A new French study lends support to the concept that cutting down on meat and dairy products, including cheese and egg yolks, and replacing them with fruits and vegetables could decrease the risk of diabetes. Meat and dairy products trigger stomach acids linked to the development of diabetes. Fruits (such as peaches, pears, apples, bananas, lemons, oranges) and vegetables diminish the effect of stomach acid by creating alkaline precursors that neutralize the acidity. Chronic acidosis, caused by increased acidity in blood and body tissues, reduces insulin sensitivity. Researchers followed nearly 66, 500 women over a period of 14 years, and found [...]

Good Eating and Sleep Habits Help Kids Succeed in School

2013-09-20T15:48:25-04:00

Adults often hear what they should be doing to improve their health. But many of these known wellness behaviors are important for kids, too, and two University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) experts say school success depends on making the right choices. Health habits, such as eating and sleep patterns, are linked to academic success, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Your brain can't work if you're not consuming enough calories, and in general that's not a problem," explained Krista Casazza, Ph.D., R.D., assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences. "But when kids go to school without [...]

Mediterranean diet is brain food

2013-08-09T09:04:56-04:00

Sticking to a Mediterranean diet may not just be good for your heart, it may be good for your brain as well, according to a new study. Researchers in Spain followed more than 1,000 people for six and a half years, and found that participants who were on a Mediterranean diet and supplemented that diet with extra nuts or olive oil performed better on cognitive tests at the end of the study period than the control group, which followed a lower-fat diet. The study was published Monday in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. "We found that a Mediterranean diet with olive oil [...]

Chiropractic in Chatelaine Magazine

2010-06-02T23:07:46-04:00

In a recent update from my Chiropractic Associations, I was informed that they had secured a regular "column" and presence in one of Canada's top women's magazines, Chatelaine.  They will also be present on Chatelaine's website - talking about healthy back habits.  This first placement and presence talks about safe gardening tips so people don't create problems for themselves. I see this as a small, but positive step in the right direction.  I still find their message about what chiropractors do, and who we are, to be weak and unclear.  But I support their efforts, and keep track of them so [...]
