Secret to better health? Less meat, more veggies.

2013-12-20T09:34:52-05:00

A new French study lends support to the concept that cutting down on meat and dairy products, including cheese and egg yolks, and replacing them with fruits and vegetables could decrease the risk of diabetes. Meat and dairy products trigger stomach acids linked to the development of diabetes. Fruits (such as peaches, pears, apples, bananas, lemons, oranges) and vegetables diminish the effect of stomach acid by creating alkaline precursors that neutralize the acidity. Chronic acidosis, caused by increased acidity in blood and body tissues, reduces insulin sensitivity. Researchers followed nearly 66, 500 women over a period of 14 years, and found [...]

Exercise of any sort is beneficial no matter how old you are!

2013-12-13T09:40:32-05:00

Are You A Senior And Don’t Like Going To The Gym? Try Some Exercises At Home: Researchers in Sweden observed nearly 4,000 60-year-olds for an average of 12.5 years, and monitored how frequently they performed “non-exercise physical activity” such as home repairs, cutting the lawn or hedge, car maintenance, going hunting or fishing, cycling and gathering berries. While we all know the benefits of regular moderate exercise and the health risks of prolonged sitting, not much is known about the possible advantages or disadvantages of  “non-exercise physical activity” or NEPA. Participants with high levels of NEPA, excluding formal exercise, had a [...]

Why Medicating A Fever May Not Be The Best Choice

2013-11-29T10:18:42-05:00

Many of us grew up learning that when you have a fever, you should take medication to “bring it down”. But is that really what we should be doing? Not necessarily. Normal body temperature is around 98.6°F or 37°C, give or take a degree or two.  For most adults, a fever is considered to be a temperature of over 100°F or 37.8°C. For a child, a temperature over 100.4°F, 38°C would fit the bill. Fevers come about because something has caused the body to go into “fight” mode in response to disease, illness or stress and they usually disappear within a [...]

Exercise Is As Effective As Medication For Treating Heart Disease And Diabetes

2013-10-28T14:43:37-04:00

Over and over again the benefits of regular exercise are being touted, and yet so many fail to take action for one reason or another. We know that just a brisk walk a day (moderate intensity for 2.5 hours a week) can help lower the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. How about exercising so as to avoid taking medication, specifically in regards to heart disease and diabetes? Researchers from the London School of Economics, Harvard Medical School and Stanford University School of Medicine wanted to find out if exercise was as effective as medication in preventing and [...]

iPosture Being Blamed for Back Pain Among Young Adults

2013-10-18T09:25:54-04:00

We have iPods, iPhones, iPads and now we have iPosture! An alarming number of 18 to 24-year olds are reporting back pain, and hand held electronics seem to be the cause. The pain is a product of the stooped body posture adopted by those who are texting, emailing or playing games on their iPods, iPhones, iPads and all other hand held electronic devices. The reported pain is leading to more lost work days per year as compared to previous generations. When operating your gadgets, hold them out in front of you or view them on a table propped at an angle, [...]

Could The Consumption Of Refined Grains And Sugars Be Linked To Developing Alzheimer’s Disease?

2013-10-11T16:16:11-04:00

Turns out that they could be. According to research conducted over the past 8 years, Alzheimer’s is revealing itself as a metabolic disease, similar in part with Type 2 Diabetes. In fact, Alzheimer’s has been nicknamed “Type 3 Diabetes” because of the apparent relationship between it, abnormal blood sugars and developing insulin resistance. Being overweight, inactive and eating an unhealthy diet can set us up for developing this debilitating disease later on in life. There is still so much more to learn about this intriguing relationship, such as investigating slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s through the use of anti-diabetic drugs. Yet [...]

Back Pain is the # 1 cause of disability in North America

2013-10-04T12:47:15-04:00

The 5 lumbar bones of the lower spine not only support the body but protect the spinal cord and nerves.  Between the vertebrae are shock absorbent fluid-filled discs. Damage to these bones and nerves can cause debilitating pain and numbness, making it difficult to work or even perform basic acts of daily living. Back injuries can result from heavy lifting, sports, twisting while lifting, or even gardening, any time you’re using the lower back muscles for activities that they aren’t used to.  The “new” activity causes muscle spasms, sprained ligaments or herniated (slipped) discs. And pain.  It can also be caused [...]

The link between fast food and depression

2013-09-27T14:53:33-04:00

According to a recent study out of the University of Eastern Finland, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables not only benefits your physical body but also your mental well-being, specifically in regards to depression. When we’re depressed, it can be tempting to give in and reach for those high fat, high sugary nutrient-lacking foods such as burgers, fries, shakes etc. under the misguided belief that these items will fill the void in our gut and make us feel “good”. Unfortunately, it appears that there is a link between eating those items and depression. In other words, the more you eat [...]
