According to a recent study out of the University of Eastern Finland, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables not only benefits your physical body but also your mental well-being, specifically in regards to depression.

When we’re depressed, it can be tempting to give in and reach for those high fat, high sugary nutrient-lacking foods such as burgers, fries, shakes etc. under the misguided belief that these items will fill the void in our gut and make us feel “good”. Unfortunately, it appears that there is a link between eating those items and depression. In other words, the more you eat them, the greater the likelihood that you will experience depression.

Instead of setting yourself up for depression by eating nutrient-lacking food items full of sugar and fat, choose to eat nutrient dense products full such as low-fat cheese, poultry, fish, berries and whole-grain products. Not only will your body benefit, but so will your mental state of being.
