Chiropractor have known for years that what you eat has a huge effect on your mental health. Along with receiving Chiropractic care, proper nutrition is critical for health. NEW study finds a diet loaded with fruit, vegetables, fish, beans, nuts and olive oil can affect your brain chemistry and actually lift your mood. The Mediterranean diet has long been associated with good health, cutting the risk of heart disease and some cancers, and now has been shown to staving off depression. Are your kids getting enough water?

2015-07-03T19:09:30-04:00

With summer here it's important to ensure your children (and you) are drinking lots of water. More than half of children and teenagers in the United States might not be properly hydrated, according to a nationwide study from the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. In fact, 54.5% of the students in the study had urine concentrations that qualified them as below their minimum daily water intake. "I was surprised that almost one in four kids drank no water during the course of their day," said lead author Erica Kenney, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Social and [...]

Half-million cancers worldwide linked to obesity

2014-12-04T21:22:03-05:00

Excess body weight caused about 481,000 new cancer cases in 2012, according to a new study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, an arm of the World Health Organization. That works out to about 3.6 per cent of all cancers worldwide, the majority of which occur in North America and Europe, according to the study published in the medical journal Lancet Oncology on Wednesday. Scientists hypothesize that excess body fat may trigger cancer by changing insulin, glucose and hormone levels, and increasing chronic inflammation. Dr. Darren Brenner, who works with Alberta Health Services and is not linked to the Lancet Oncology-published study, said 3.6 per cent [...]

The bitter truth about sugar and its effects on your health

2014-10-10T19:33:27-04:00

This spring, the World Health Organization made a bold move by urging people to restrict their sugar intake to less than five percent of total calories. That’s a sharp drop from the 16 percent that Americans consume on average, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In fact, the agency proposed changing food labels for the first time in a decade to reflect the amount of sugar added during the production process. And last month, the Center for Science and Democracy at the Union of Concerned Scientists issued a damning report on the sweet stuff. It alleged that food and beverage manufacturers and industry [...]

Could The Consumption Of Refined Grains And Sugars Be Linked To Developing Alzheimer’s Disease?

2013-10-11T16:16:11-04:00

Turns out that they could be. According to research conducted over the past 8 years, Alzheimer’s is revealing itself as a metabolic disease, similar in part with Type 2 Diabetes. In fact, Alzheimer’s has been nicknamed “Type 3 Diabetes” because of the apparent relationship between it, abnormal blood sugars and developing insulin resistance. Being overweight, inactive and eating an unhealthy diet can set us up for developing this debilitating disease later on in life. There is still so much more to learn about this intriguing relationship, such as investigating slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s through the use of anti-diabetic drugs. Yet [...]

The link between fast food and depression

2013-09-27T14:53:33-04:00

According to a recent study out of the University of Eastern Finland, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables not only benefits your physical body but also your mental well-being, specifically in regards to depression. When we’re depressed, it can be tempting to give in and reach for those high fat, high sugary nutrient-lacking foods such as burgers, fries, shakes etc. under the misguided belief that these items will fill the void in our gut and make us feel “good”. Unfortunately, it appears that there is a link between eating those items and depression. In other words, the more you eat [...]
