Recently, a patient brought this article to my attention. When I started reading it, I felt for him, and I had a greater connection with many of my patients; my professional world has never involved more than 7-8 people, and while I love what I do and sometimes work too hard, I’ve never been close to burnout – something I hear about all too often from my friends, family and patients who work in larger organizations.
As ‘John’ and I are talking about his work stress, a new term was coined- “socio-emotional” stress; our definition – a social/professional stress resulting in emotional distress. Here is a guy, working hard for the same large company for 25 plus years, and feeling every bit of responsibility for hhis tenure.
It made me more and more aware of how large companies are not causing, but perhaps allowing their employees to feel “worked to the bone”, and ignoring the impact that this stress has when it accumulates over time.
This is one of the primary stressors that create increased need for chiropractic care; if I can better identify what is causing my patient’s issues, I can prescribe more impactful solutions, and get greater results through chiropractic. By ignoring the cause, I can’t provide a solid solution. Just one of the ways I strive to find a solution for the cause, and not just treat the effect.
So watch yourself, listen to your body, and don’t let this happen to you. Until next time,
Dr J
