Change of pace today. Here’s a quick “life hack” you might find useful. According to a recent article in Fast Company, if you ever find yourself faced with a boring, difficult, or time-consuming task, don’t tell yourself “I’ll do it later”. Instead, build up in your head that it WILL be difficult, and you’ll probably hate it.
You might just find yourself scrambling to get it over with. Why?
This idea has its roots in a joint study between the University of British Columbia and Princeton. Researchers found that anticipating positive experiences contains both happy emotions (e.g. savouring the thought) and unhappy ones (e.g. waiting for it to happen). Negative experiences, on the other hand, offer the double whammy of not wanting them AND having to wait for them. The solution?
According to the article:
“The key to getting tasks off your to-do list is to harness the psychological discomfort of dread, which is negative and unpleasant—and therefore a feeling that most people seek to relieve.”
So instead of pushing uncomfortable tasks away…
Embrace the fact that you’re going to have a smorgasbord of negative feelings all at the same time; boredom, frustration, knowing that a task that should take five minutes might take you all afternoon. If you acknowledge your dread (and be sure to notice that you’re already experiencing it) your instincts to “get it over with” have high odds of kicking in. I encourage you to put this theory to the test.
If you’re not currently a patient, it may interest you to know…one thing that is NOT difficult or painful… is my method of chiropractic adjusting. (How’s that for a segue? 😉)
In fact, my preferred technique using a Thompson Drop-Table allows me to modulate the force used from VERY gentle, to firm (but not jarring) for bolder individuals. It generally does not hurt and most patients report feeling better, and standing straighter, after most adjustment visits. As a bonus, I’ve recently acquired an additional adjusting TOOL – the Accustim device – that additionally allows me to adjust more sensitive or resistant spinal areas with ease and added impact, as I garner more feedback in the past month.
Cheers to making your life easier!
