If you’d like (or need!) some simple ways to sleep better, here’s a great free resource. My patient Georgia recently introduced me to this website:Mysleepwell.ca  According to the site, which is a not-for-profit run by sleep researchers at Dalhousie University, they have two goals: 1) to help people with insomnia get their sleep back without medications; and 2) to help people stop taking sleeping pills safely and effectively. After perusing the site, I can tell you it is a goldmine of great sleep insights! You’ll find tips, ideas, and strategies for better sleep, learn about the dangers of sleeping pills, and [...]

Try This Simple Rule For Better Sleep

2020-10-13T16:09:46-04:00

Perhaps the #2 complaint I hear – from new patients anyway – is “I don’t have enough energy”. (COVID work-from-home scenarios have increased spine & body pain complaints up to #1) Well, it might not surprise you to know that the foundation for energy is none other than consistently getting a better quality of sleep. And while some people claim they’re good with six hours or so, research would suggest otherwise. According to most studies on cognition, 7-8 hours is mandatory. Researchers have also found that the effect of not enough sleep builds up! This is true even if subjects don’t [...]

The “Unseen” Perils Of Travel

2020-03-03T14:03:15-05:00

From the category of health risks you might not have considered… I enjoyed a lovely vacation with the family in Mexico last week.  Lots of sunny fun.  Here are the cute pics I wasn’t able to load for you last week with the subpar resort Wi-Fi: Here’s why this is important for you: While the bed in the hotel was decent, I did “pay the price” of the temporary sleeping arrangements each morning with daily albeit mild stiffness. And I’m generally healthy; for anyone with pre-existing symptoms, or travelers who are a bit older – even if otherwise in good shape [...]

5 Reasons To Take A Break From Alcohol

2020-02-04T13:26:08-05:00

“Good actions give strength to ourselves, and inspire good actions in others.” -- Samuel Smiles   You may not know this. But many people are participating in a campaign called Dry Feb this month. Check it out here: https://www.dryfeb.ca/about The short version is you agree to give up alcohol for the month of February to help raise funds for cancer research.  What a great idea.  Do something for your health and contribute to a cause while you’re at it! It’s win-win. Any type or amount of alcohol increases your cancer risk. According to the website, in 2017, an estimated 8,000 cancers [...]

Why Your Pillows Might Be Killing Your Neck

2019-08-28T12:45:58-04:00

It’s official. Baby Beverly joined our clan on Saturday evening.  Mom was a champ, and powered through to a healthy home arrival just 4 hours later (the beauty of using a midwife is that they come check on you the next day in the comfort of your home). Hayden’s “adapting” – he’ll be a great big brother when he comes to term with sharing his parents.  It’s been a busy few days for all of us… So I’m gonna keep this short and sweet. (She’s napping as I write this.  I probably should be too.) Anyway, since I’ve been fantasizing about [...]

5 Rules For 100 Years of Quality Life

2019-08-13T12:47:42-04:00

My title today sounds ambitious, it’s true. But I’ve never been more convinced that anyone can enjoy vibrant health and a high standard of life throughout a full 100-year lifespan.  We’re taught to think that we’re born, we live, then we get a disease and we die.  It doesn’t have to be that way!  I’m not saying you can live forever.  But you can live up to your potential throughout ALL your years. And it doesn’t have to be that hard. Here are 5 simple rules for 100-years of healthy life: Eat well. Kick the SAD (Standard American Diet) out of [...]

4 Tips to Help You Sleep Like A Baby

2019-03-05T14:57:25-05:00

There’s an old joke that goes: “When I was going through [insert life event here] I slept like a baby…I woke up every two hours and cried.” Today’s tips are true to the spirit of the saying, thankfully. Good sleep sows the seeds of good health.  It even leads to better food choices (appetite, cravings, and willpower are all shaped by your quality of sleep). Yet, sleep problems are amongst the top complaints I hear with new patients. Ok, enough suspense.   Here are 4 tips to help you sleep better: Wake up at the same time every morning. If there’s [...]
