FAQ
Questions, answered
Thinking about booking an evaluation? Here are answers to some of the questions people commonly have before their first visit. Still have a question? Our team is happy to help.
Your first two visits
What happens at my first visit?
The first visit focuses on understanding your health history, concerns and goals. Dr. Gelber will conduct a thorough assessment that may include posture and movement analysis, hands-on examination, relevant orthopedic and neurological tests, and computerized Insight scans. X-rays or other imaging may be considered when clinically indicated.
The goal is to build a clearer picture of your situation before making recommendations.
Will I be adjusted on my first visit?
The first visit is generally focused on the evaluation rather than beginning care.
At the second visit, your Report of Findings, Dr. Gelber will explain the examination findings, discuss his recommendations and answer your questions. If chiropractic care is appropriate and you choose to proceed, care may begin at that appointment.
What happens at the second visit?
Your Report of Findings brings the information together. Dr. Gelber will walk you through the relevant examination findings, explain what they may mean for your concerns and goals, and discuss his recommendations.
You'll have an opportunity to ask questions, understand your options and review any proposed care plan and associated fees before deciding whether to proceed.
Why does the clinic assess before recommending care?
At Annex Family Chiropractic, recommendations are based on the individual, not just the symptoms they report. A thorough assessment helps Dr. Gelber understand your history, evaluate relevant findings and determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate.
Your symptoms matter, but they don't always tell the whole story.
What should I bring to my first visit?
Please bring any relevant health information, details of previous injuries or care, and information about investigations or imaging that may be useful. If you have recent X-rays or other imaging reports, let our team know.
We'll also provide information about any forms that should be completed before your appointment.
Assessment and Insight scans
Do I need X-rays?
Not everyone needs X-rays. Imaging decisions are made on an individual basis, taking into account your history, examination findings, clinical indications and any relevant imaging you already have.
If X-rays are recommended, Dr. Gelber will explain why and discuss their purpose, potential benefits and risks before proceeding. X-rays are not used automatically simply because someone is seeing a chiropractor.
Children under 12 are generally not X-rayed at the clinic, and X-rays are not used during pregnancy.
Are X-rays covered by OHIP?
If you have a valid Ontario health card, X-rays are covered by OHIP. They are taken off site at a licensed diagnostic imaging centre. If you don't have an Ontario health card, the X-rays are paid out of pocket.
Our team can explain the process and any applicable fees before imaging is arranged.
What are the Insight scans?
The computerized Insight scans provide additional information that Dr. Gelber considers alongside your health history and physical examination.
Depending on the scan, they measure features such as muscle activity along the spine, skin temperature patterns or heart rate variability. Each provides a different piece of information; none is a standalone diagnosis or a complete measure of your overall health.
Their value comes from interpreting the results in context, alongside the rest of your assessment.
Do the scans tell you exactly what's wrong?
No single scan can answer that on its own. The scans add information to the overall assessment, but their results need to be considered alongside your history, physical examination and other relevant findings.
Dr. Gelber will explain what the results show, what they may suggest and how they do or don't affect his recommendations.
Fees and insurance
How much does the initial evaluation cost?
Please check our current booking options or contact our team for the applicable evaluation fee.
Your initial evaluation includes a detailed health history and examination, relevant computerized scans, and a review of the findings at your second visit, as outlined in your booking information.
Any recommended care plan and associated fees are discussed before you decide whether to proceed.
Does extended health insurance cover chiropractic care?
Many extended health plans include chiropractic benefits, but coverage, annual limits and reimbursement rules vary. We recommend checking directly with your insurer to confirm your individual coverage.
Our team can provide receipts and help clarify the information you may need for your claim.
Will I know the cost before I commit to a care plan?
Yes. At your Report of Findings, Dr. Gelber will explain his recommendations and the associated costs. You'll have an opportunity to ask questions, consider your options and decide whether you'd like to move forward.
We want you to understand the proposed care and its cost before making a decision.
Children and pregnancy
Does the clinic see babies and children?
Yes. Annex Family Chiropractic welcomes patients from infancy through adulthood.
Care for children is adapted to their age, development, size and individual circumstances. The techniques and amount of force used differ from those used with adults.
Dr. Gelber will assess whether chiropractic care is appropriate and explain his findings and recommendations to the parent or guardian. Parents are encouraged to ask questions and make an informed decision about proceeding.
Is chiropractic care appropriate during pregnancy?
Assessment and care are adapted to each person's circumstances and stage of pregnancy.
When appropriate, Dr. Gelber may use low-force prenatal approaches, including the Webster Technique. X-rays are not used during pregnancy.
If there are specific concerns or pregnancy-related complications, the appropriateness of chiropractic care and the need to coordinate with other healthcare providers will be discussed.
What care is like
Will an adjustment hurt?
People respond differently, and the approach depends on the examination findings, health history, comfort and individual needs. Many adjustments are comfortable, and lower-force techniques may be appropriate in some circumstances.
Dr. Gelber will explain the proposed approach and obtain consent before proceeding. Patients are encouraged to ask questions or speak up if something feels uncomfortable.
Can the clinic help with my particular problem?
That depends on what may be causing or contributing to your symptoms and whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your situation. No outcome can be promised before an assessment.
Dr. Gelber will review your history and examination findings, then explain whether chiropractic care may be helpful, what you could reasonably work toward and whether another type of care may be more suitable.
How many visits will I need?
There is no single number of visits that suits everyone. Recommendations depend on your presentation, history, goals, examination findings and how you respond to care.
If a care plan is recommended, Dr. Gelber will explain the reasoning, what you're working toward and how progress will be reviewed. The plan is discussed with you rather than based on an arbitrary number of visits.
Will I have to keep coming forever?
No one should feel obligated to continue care indefinitely. The goal is to help patients function better and make informed decisions about their spinal health, not to create dependence on chiropractic.
Some people choose ongoing care because it fits their goals for spinal health and staying active. Others prefer a more focused period of care and then reassess. What's appropriate depends on the individual, their progress and their preferences.
Can the clinic help if I've had this problem for years?
Long-standing concerns deserve a careful assessment, not a promise of a quick fix. The history and contributing factors may be more complex, and results vary from person to person.
Dr. Gelber will assess your current situation, discuss what may be realistic and help determine whether chiropractic care is a reasonable option.
Do I need to be in pain to see a chiropractor?
No. Some people book because of back pain, neck pain, headaches or other symptoms. Others want to better understand their spinal health, improve how they move or stay active as the physical demands of life change.
Whatever brings you in, the starting point is the same: understand your situation, assess the findings and discuss whether chiropractic care makes sense for you.
What if chiropractic isn't the right fit for me?
The purpose of the evaluation is to determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your situation. If Dr. Gelber believes another type of care would be more suitable, he'll explain his reasoning and, where possible, help direct you toward an appropriate next step.
Our goal is to help you make an informed decision about your health, not to recommend chiropractic care when it isn't the right fit.
Returning patients
It's been a while since my last visit. What should I book?
If it has been more than six months since your last visit, please book a returning-patient reassessment so we can review where things stand before deciding what care makes sense now.
Select the returning-patient reassessment option in our booking system, or contact our team if you're unsure which appointment to choose.
